Your assignment: post one and only one comment about your reading of chapters one and two of Catcher in the Rye. Remember to read the existing comments, so you don't duplicate what someone else has already written. You should also use complete sentences, correct grammar, and appropriate language. Please pick one of the following options:
- Ask one simple question about the reading. Be as specific as possible. We'll try to answer your question in class.
- Copy your favorite sentence from the first two chapters, and give a brief reason why it's your favorite.
You must comment before the start of your class period, but remember that the task gets more challenging the longer that you wait since you cannot duplicate what someone else has said.
First commenter gets to hold the Voltron key during class.
Good luck!
"I was the goddam manager of the fencing team." (3) This quote is my favorite because it shows that the narrator is using sarcasm and isn't a very serious guy. It also made me chuckle.
ReplyDeleteWhat is shooting the bull during the conversation between Mr. Spencer and Holden.
ReplyDeleteWhy is he such a loner?
ReplyDelete"She liked me. At least, I think she did" (Salinger, 6) This quote shows that Holden is a loner but convinces himself that he isn't.
ReplyDelete"Anyway, it was December and all, and it was cold as a witch's teat, especially on top of that stupid hill." This sets the atmosphere to the story with the climate and his dissatisfaction of the school.
ReplyDelete"It was a terrible school, no matter how you looked at it." This shows that he hates his school and is unhappy with his current situation.
ReplyDelete"Now he's out in Hollywood, D.B., being a prostitute." This quote shows Holden's humor and sarcastic attitude.
ReplyDeleteWhat are qualms?
ReplyDeleteWhy does Holden have such a good relationship with old Spencer?
ReplyDelete"Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then
ReplyDeleteit's a game, all right--I'll admit that." (8). This quotation displays his humor and how he never respects his authority.
Why does Holden have such a good relationship with old Spencer?
ReplyDeleteWhy does Spencer care so much about Holden?
ReplyDeleteIs Holden overreacting about Mr. Haas and phonies?
ReplyDeleteIf you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.
ReplyDelete"It was that kind of a crazy afternoon, terrifically cold, and no sun out or anything, and you felt like you were disappearing every time you crossed a road" (5). I feel this sentence may foreshadow what is to come in the book.
ReplyDelete"All he did was lift the Atlantic Monthly off his lap and try to chuck in on the bed, next to me. He missed. It was only about two inches away, but he missed anyway. (14)"
ReplyDelete"I was sixteen then, and I'm seventeen now, and I sometimes act like I'm about thirteen. It's really ironical, because I'm six foot two and a half and I have gray hair" (13). I find this sentence really funny, because he insults himself on how he looks.
ReplyDelete"I forgot to tell you about that. They kicked me out." (4) This sentence contains excellent examples of both humor and character description.
ReplyDelete"I don't like to see old guys in their pajamas and bathrobes anyway." (7) This sentence is funny because nobody likes to see old men in bathrobes.
ReplyDeleteMr. Reynolds this is Jacob! im using Addisons computer though. My question is is the headmasters daughter a love interest of Holdens?
ReplyDeleteMy question is why would Holden go to a private school such as Pencey after being being kicked out of multiple schools before if he wasn't going to give any effort in the work?
ReplyDeleteMy question is why would Holden go to a private school such as Pencey after being being kicked out of multiple schools before if he wasn't going to give any effort in the work?
ReplyDeleteI left all the foils and equipment and stuff on the goddam subway.
ReplyDeleteHow many schools has Holden been kicked out of? -Michael Elkin
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't Holden go to a public school if he applies no effort and has no future so far in his life?
ReplyDeleteWhy is he so against movies?
ReplyDelete"Sometimes I act a lot older than I am-I really do-but people never notice it. People never notice anything." This quote shows that despite his long and drawn out speech to Mr. Spencer about being an irresponsible and immature moron, to some extent, Holden feels that he is unjustly classified as stupid and immature.
ReplyDelete"He put my goddam paper down then and looked at me like he'd just beaten the hell
ReplyDeleteout of me in ping-pong or something." This quotation vividly describes the anger and disappointment in Mr. Spencer towards Holden's lack of effort and extremely poor quality paper. Plus we can all visualize that special look on someones face when they destroy someone in ping-pong.
"He put my goddam paper down then and looked at me like he'd just beaten hell
ReplyDeleteout of me in ping-pong or something." I loved this quote with a passion because beating someone in ping pong has always been a dreamy feeling just as if you just kissed the love of your life. Great feeling it is. Also a question of mine: Is Holden very social? By social I mean does he rake in all the girls or is he always a loner?
Is Holden smart? I know that he has been kicked out of many schools, but he might not be putting in any effort because he is bored, especially if there is some overlap between what he learned in his past schools and new school.

ReplyDeleteWhy is it that Holden is such a corrupted kid? I am assuming something affected him deeply as a kid, possibly something having to do with his parents.
